Advancing the EU Circular Bioeconomy: ONE EARTH and the Green Deal

The ONE EARTH project is closely aligned with European Union strategies such as the European Green Deal and the Bioeconomy Strategy, which aim to decouple economic growth from resource use and foster a circular economy. The EU defines the bioeconomy as “the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources and waste streams into value-added products” – a concept directly reflected in ONE EARTH’s approach of transforming waste into valuable goods.

The bio-based economy is already a significant contributor to Europe’s growth, accounting for approximately 5% of EU GDP and providing over 17 million jobs in 2022. By creating innovative applications for agricultural and marine waste, ONE EARTH advances EU objectives for climate neutrality and resource efficiency.

This project demonstrates how Horizon Europe-funded research under Cluster 6 (Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment) is enabling sustainable innovation in line with the Circular Economy Action Plan and the updated EU Bioeconomy Strategy. The project’s alignment with these high-level policy frameworks highlights its role in supporting a greener, more competitive, and more resilient European economy through advancements in the bio-based sector.
