Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are a group of short-chain organic acids that play an important role in microbial metabolism and industrial biotechnology. The most common VFAs include acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid.
These compounds are produced naturally by microorganisms when they break down organic matter in environments where oxygen is limited. This biological process, known as anaerobic fermentation, occurs in many natural environments such as soils, sediments, and the digestive systems of animals.
Anaerobic fermentation is also widely used in engineered systems, including anaerobic digesters that treat organic waste from agriculture, food industries, and wastewater treatment plants. During this process, complex organic materials are converted into simpler molecules, including volatile fatty acids.
Because VFAs are intermediate compounds in microbial metabolism, they can be further transformed into other valuable substances through biological or chemical processes.
