The ONE EARTH project was represented at the 12th IWA International Symposium on Waste Management Problems in Agro-Industries (Agro’2025), held from 10–12 September 2025 in Istanbul, Turkey. The event gathered around 110–130 participants from the international scientific community and served as a valuable forum to exchange knowledge and discuss innovative waste management solutions for the agro-industrial sector.
The symposium focused on promoting the development of sustainable technologies and circular economy strategies for the valorisation of organic residues and nutrient recovery. These topics are closely aligned with ONE EARTH’s objectives to transform agro-industrial by-products into high-value resources.
Prof. Francesco Fatone, coordinator of WWEELab (UNIVPM), delivered a keynote lecture titled “Agro-Industrial Waste Biorefineries: Pilot and Demonstration Experiences in EU-Funded Projects”. His presentation highlighted how the ONE EARTH project contributes to advancing sustainable agro-industrial practices in Europe by developing technologies that help close the nutrient loop and support a circular bioeconomy.
In addition, an oral presentation was delivered, discussing the lab-scale acidogenic fermentation of cheese whey into short-chain fatty acids (VFA). The results presented were developed within Task 2.1 and reflect collaborative research under both the SEA2LAND and ONE EARTH projects, funded by Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.
Participation in Agro’2025 provided an excellent opportunity to disseminate ONE EARTH’s research outcomes, exchange ideas with international experts, and strengthen collaboration within the field of sustainable waste management and circular biotechnologies.
