Polypeptides in the ONE EARTH Biorefinery Concept

Within the ONE EARTH project, polypeptides are one of the key bio-based compounds produced from residues of animal origin. The project focuses on developing an integrated multi-purpose biorefinery that can convert biological residues into valuable products for multiple sectors.

The feedstocks explored in the project include residue materials from fishery, poultry and dairy sectors, such as fish bones, chicken feathers, and cheese whey. These residues contain significant amounts of proteins that can be processed through biotechnological and enzymatic methods to obtain polypeptides.

By breaking down larger proteins into peptide fractions, these processes enable the recovery of valuable compounds that can serve as ingredients in a variety of applications. For example, peptide fractions can be incorporated into products such as food supplements, aquaculture feed components, cosmetic formulations, and bio-based materials.

In addition to producing polypeptides, the ONE EARTH biorefinery concept also integrates other biological conversion pathways. Organic residues can be processed into intermediate compounds such as volatile fatty acids, which can subsequently support the production of additional bio-based molecules such as polyunsaturated fatty acids.

By combining multiple production pathways within a single system, the project aims to maximise the value obtained from biological residues while reducing waste and improving resource efficiency.

This integrated approach reflects the principles of the circular bioeconomy and aligns with European strategies such as the EU Circular Economy Action Plan and the European Bioeconomy Strategy, which promote the sustainable use of biological resources and the development of innovative bio-based industries.
