The first year of the ONE EARTH project has come to a close, marking the start of an ambitious journey towards creating circular value chains from animal-origin residues. Coordinated by the University of Bologna, the consortium of 14 partners from nine countries has worked throughout the year to transform the project’s vision into practical steps.
Key achievements of Year 1 include:
- launching collaborative research on three biomass streams – dairy by-products, poultry residues, and fish processing side streams
- setting up initial laboratory and pilot-scale experiments to test biotechnological pathways
- strengthening cooperation between terrestrial and aquatic industries
- building connections with farmers, fishers, SMEs, and research communities to align the project’s work with real-world needs
While no final results are available yet, the progress achieved during this first year ensures that ONE EARTH is on track to deliver innovation in the years ahead. The next phase will bring laboratory findings into pilot demonstrations and open opportunities for new circular bio-based products.
As Europe advances its Circular Economy Action Plan and Bioeconomy Strategy, ONE EARTH’s work demonstrates how research and innovation can be transformed into practical, sustainable solutions.
