VFAs in the ONE EARTH Biorefinery Concept

Within the ONE EARTH project, volatile fatty acids play a key role in the development of an integrated multi-purpose biorefinery for residues of animal origin.

Organic residues from food systems, including fishery, poultry and dairy residues (for example fish bones, chicken feathers, and cheese whey), are processed through microbial fermentation to produce VFAs. These compounds then serve as intermediate molecules that can support further biotechnological processes.

One important application explored in the project is the use of VFAs as carbon sources for microorganisms capable of producing polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). In this way, VFAs act as precursors that enable the production of valuable bio-based ingredients.

By linking residue valorisation with advanced biotechnological processes, the ONE EARTH project demonstrates how biological residues can be transformed into high-value compounds. This approach supports the development of circular value chains that reduce waste while creating sustainable products for sectors such as food, feed, cosmetics, and agriculture.

Such strategies align with European initiatives promoting sustainable resource management, including the EU Circular Economy Action Plan and the European Bioeconomy Strategy.
